Transformer Cooling with Misting Systems
As transformer station across North America continue to age, more maintenance and upkeep is required to keep these aging units performing. Over the last few years with the excessive heat during the summer many large transformer stations have simply overloaded during the hottest periods over the summer.
Connecting Misting Systems to the cooling fans next to the Transformers and placing Misting Fans around the transformers have proved a valuable resource in bringing down the oil temperature in transformer stations. Reduction in oil temperature indicates that the Transformers are operating more efficiently and with less wear and tear on the systems. Transformer oil coolers play a critical role in keeping electrical generation system reliable. Power plant generators produce electricity that has to be converted to high voltage for more efficient transporation across wires to substations near business, factories and homes. The transformers that convert the electricity to high voltage are very efficient and only use something like 0.5 percent of the electrical load lost in the form of heat. The heat loss is relatively small it’s effect can be quite large. The heat that is produced must be carried away from the dissipated away from the transformers. If the transformer is not cooled it will overheat will be cause damage or even complete shut-down.
The load a transformer can handle, without damage, can be increase with an effective misting system. These systems can be in the form of high-pressure stainless steel line with high-pressure nozzle systems placed in front of the fans already installed fans. Another alternative is to install high-pressure Misting Fans being located inside the transformer room or next to the transformer. These Misting Systems can increase its load capacity by increasing its ability to dissipate heat. In short, a high- pressure misting system increases the load capacity of a transformer by enhancing its ability to dissipate the heat resulting from its operation. These misting systems reduce the negative effect of the excessive heat and allow more efficient use thereby decreasing the wear on the tear, or aging, on the transformers.
